Smart EV Charging Newquay

Today we installed our first EV Charging Point for one of our regular clients at their home office.

This Zappi 2 Smart EV Charging Point by MyEnergi is a tethered unit, with lots of capabilities such as a Fast Charge, an Eco Charge and a Smart Charge, which trickle charges your connected EV using excess energy generated by your Solar PV that would otherwise be exported and lost.

MyEnergi offer the Zappi 2 in an untethered unit as well, which we will be installing in the upcoming weeks.

The Zappi 2 can be connected to the MyEnergi Hub which allows you to create an account, and use the user friendly app to set scheduled charges, and monitor the usage and costs on the MyEnergi Hub.

You can team the Zappi up with the Eddi Smart Hot Water Controller which can also be added to the portal, which will heat your hot water using excess PV also.

In this instance we obtained our client an WCS OLEV grant towards the cost of the installation.

Widely used to combat shading, SolarEdge also boasts a whole host of other benefits.
Sure, you may have a situation where shading may cause a standard string based PV array to underperform, then SolarEdge is the go to market leader to get over this.
This is because the downside of a standard string based PV system is it can only ever perform as well as the weakest panel.
With SolarEdge, each panel is individually optimised, so each panel performs at its best at all times, no longer affected by that tree covering one panel at a time as the sun sweeps across the sky, or the giant bird poo that the middle panel is covered in, and it hasn’t rained for weeks!
A SolarEdge PV system will also start working earlier, and finish working later, due to its low start up and running voltage requirements rom the PV array.

Amazingly the SolarEdge optimisers that separate each panel, can have an affect to the tune of a 25% increase in overall system performance. 25%! Thats a massive difference.

When the PV system is off, it will drop the voltage for each panel down to 1 volt each.

Clients system was operating, but the neighbours tree, and the overhead power lines, were impacting on PV production.  

 Our client also wanted to be able to monitor the PV production and usage through the app.

 The 12 x existing 250W REC panels were removed, SolarEdge P300 optimisers were installed for each panel, and the existing Aurora Power One inverter was replaced with a WiFi connected SolarEdge 3000H Inverter. 

We coupled this with a ModBus meter and CT clamp for maximum monitoring.  

Many people don’t notice their installation has stopped generating until they go to read the generation meter, and notice the display reading has not increased.
There are many components on a Solar Installation, and this failure can be down to something simple, such as a faulty MC4 connection, a reset required on the inverter, to something a little more involved such as a replacement inverter being required.

Whilst on these call outs we have also noticed some very poor Solar PV installations, with deviations from the MCS guide and poor installation practices.

When wiring, or fitting components in a house, or business, it is of vital importance that the job is performed properly to eliminate the possibility of the user being electrocuted or the premises set on fire. Apart from that, you can always tell a good electrician’s work; it looks neat and it will last.

Some people tend to be unwilling to call out an electrician until it’s practically too late because electricians generally charge a callout fee on top of the work they do, but surely it’s better to pay the charge and have the job done properly than wait until the house catches fire, or someone is electrocuted. Another aspect to consider is that electricity is a valuable resource that must be taken care of in order to avoid using unnecessary electrical power and pushing up your electricity bill. Always unplug appliances when they are not being used.

It is a legal requirement for Guest House owners, Landlords, who rent out properties, etc., that provide appliances for their employees, must have those appliances tested, though the HSE do not stipulate how often, common sense should, therefore, prevail. There is no requirement to record when a test was carried out, though it would seem sensible to maintain such a record and a good electrician should furnish each property tested with a PAT Log, (Portable Appliance Testing Log).

With some things, it really is best to pay for quality; cutting costs by cutting corners can be a false economy and it can be dangerous too.

Research by the Gas Safe Register and the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) showed that some people were prepared to become DIY electricians and gas engineers for the day, if it meant they could save a mere £60.

Besides the potential to make a real mess of a job that really should be left to a professional, the dangers of carrying out DIY electrical and gas work at home shouldn’t be ignored. A wrongly fitted fuse or an un-earthed electrical appliance can cause serious injury or even death.

It’s estimated that half of all domestic fires in the UK are caused by an electrical appliance. Research by the ESC indicated that a tenth of all people would rewire their own home despite the clear dangers of doing so.

With this in mind, to ensure your home is safely wired and you don’t pay over the odds for electrical services, the ESC recommends that you get at least three quotations for your domestic electrical jobs. Don’t necessarily go with the cheapest – any ‘sparky’ that works on your wiring should be approved by a reputable body and should be a qualified electrician. The last thing you want is to pay someone who is no more skilled or qualified than you are.

Furthermore, any electrician should have public liability insurance of at least £2m – just in case anything should go wrong.

Of course, there are other measures you can take to ensure your house is safe from electrical accidents. Keep an eye out for hot plugs and sockets, flickering lights or fuses that frequently blow – they could be indicators of loose/faulty wiring. Also look to avoid plugging too many electrical appliances into one socket as this can lead to overheating.

Crucially, never leave any electrical appliance switched on at night – unless they are designed to be left on, such as fridges and freezers.

Following these simple measures will help ensure your home is safe – but there is never any 100% guarantee that something won’t go wrong.

Additional protection is available in the form of insurance and by requesting an online home insurance quote it soon becomes apparent how little it can cost for extra peace of mind.

A survey, completed by the NICEIC (the UK electrical contracting industry’s independent voluntary body) revealed that nearly nine out of ten (89%) homeowners don’t really think about getting their electrics fully tested, with eighty eight percent (88%) confessing that getting their gas boiler checked is more important to them. Around a third (32%) admitted they have never had the electrics in their home fully tested.

That’s why NICEIC has launched ‘MOT Your Home’, a national consumer safety campaign warning homeowners about the dangers of electrical DIY. Fronted by home-improvement expert, Linda Barker, the new campaign encourages homeowners whose property is over 10 years old to employ a registered electrician to carry out a Periodic Inspection Report, which acts like an MOT for the property.

Linda Barker, NICEIC spokesperson, says: “I’ve teamed up with the NICEIC to encourage consumers to get their homes checked and make electrical safety a top priority. Even though it’s tempting to try and save a few pennies where possible at the moment, a simple home MOT could save lives. To help homeowners ensure optimum electrical safety in their home I’ve put together some simple tips and advice to protect families and homes from electrical fire risks.”
