Tesla PowerWall 2 with SolarEdge & MyEnergi products
For this large domestic project in Cannonstown, Hayle, Cornwall, we were asked to provide a quote to meet the clients energy needs, as well as provide the best solution for full home backup in the event of a grid outage.
For this we proposed the installation of 2 x 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall storage batteries with the Tesla Backup Gateway, a 9.84kWp SolarEdge Optimised PV array, a 8kW SolarEdge inverter and a MyEnergi package comprising of a tethered Zappi and an Eddi smart hot water controller. This combination makes great use of the generated power, sending the energy to the house>batteries>EV>hot water tank respectively, which can be altered to suit the clients requirements.
Due to the clients vast flat roof we were able to install 24 x 410W Canadian Solar PV Modules, optimised by SolarEdge Optimisers to ensure maximum output per panel.
We direct fixed the array to the clients roof with a K2 S Dome frame, secured to the roof structure using Nicholson IFP300 fixing points, which were sealed by our roofing contractors using GRP to the existing GRP roof, all part of the service!
This negates the need for excessive ballast on the flat roof, which adds unnecessary weight to the roof structure, and ensures there will be no movement of the array at all in this exposed Cornish location.
At the heart of this installation is the powerhouse, the Tesla Powerwall’s.
2 x 13.5kWh monster batteries, which is are not only charged by the panels, but by the clients of peak tariff, to ensure that maximum savings can be utilised to power the clients all electric home.
The battery charges from the solar excess, and also from grid at 5kW per Powerwall, and discharges into the home at 5kW per Powerwall.
with the 2 batteries, this allows a charge/discharge rate of 10kW!
One of the best features of the Tesla Powerwall however is the facility to operate the home in a power outage.
Not only that, but it allows the inverter to operate in islanding mode, producing energy to charge the battery and power the home even when the power remains off.
Monitoring of the system is provided by MyEnergi, SolarEdge and Tesla apps, providing data for every aspect of the installation.
Smart data analysis allows the Tesla app to charge the battery from the grid if it is aware of an incoming storm or poor weather.
This allows the home to stay powered should the storm knock out the grid supply.
This was a great project to work on, and our client is very happy with the system we have designed for them which is future proof, and will allow indefinite operation even without the grid in operation!
What did our client say?
★★★★★ (5/5)
“Our solar system consists of 24 PV solar panels (8kW output), 2 Tesla Powerwall batteries, a MyEnergi Eddi controller & a Zappi (7kW) EV charger.
Chris provided the complete package from design & planning approval to installation & commissioning. He provided an outstanding level of professionalism throughout, & since the installation in late August, we have not imported any electricity from the grid !
Delighted with the Green Energy Solar System and I would thoroughly recommend Chris Selby of CS Electrical South West Ltd.”
